Pet Health Insurance

Having a pet in the family is an investment – both emotionally and financially.  And in this day, more and more people are evaluating the economics of having pet insurance to cover their pet’s medical care.  There are definite advantages to having that insurance – especially if an emergency visit is needed for an accident or sudden illness.

Resources to learn more and do comparisons

We have spent a great deal of time scouring the internet for helpful, unbiased, informative sites to help you make a decision about pet health insurance.  We found two websites and an online brochure with valuable information on pet health insurance:

The Best Pet Insurance Website

This website (www.thebestpetinsurance.com) provides a significant amount of information about pet health insurance policies.  There are informative pages on topics such as Pet Insurance Basics, Deductibles, Policy Limits, Policy Types, Pre-Certification and Exclusions.  This is an essential website to help you understand the general issues related to pet health insurance.

Pet Insurance Review Website

This website (www.petinsurancereview.com) is a customer-driven website.  It provides links to all major pet health insurance companies as well as feedback and rankings from policyholders.  This is a wonderful way to get honest feedback about the various companies.  Also, it will give you up to five quotes from a variety of insurance companies.  The best part is you only have to enter your pet information once (rather than going to each carrier and getting an individual quote).

AAHA Seal of Acceptance

When the cost may go beyond reasonable financial means, many pet owners are forced to euthanize their pet or incur burdensome debt. Studies have shown that the majority of pet owners can manage expenses up to $500, but would have difficulty with expenses beyond that level. AAHA has urged the pet insurance industry to make high-deductible policies available that we believe are in the best interest of pets. These higher deductibles reduce premiums and make pet insurance a more viable option. The AAHA Seal of Acceptance is for policies with deductibles of $500-$1,000 (see company websites for additional deductible options).

Click here to visit the AAHA website and learn more about the insurance policies that have met the requirements to achieve the AAHA seal of acceptance.

AAHA Pet Insurance Brochure

The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) also has a very good brochure entitled "Ensuring Your Pet’s Health."  It has great information on funding options for your pet’s medical care.  It also provides a thorough checklist of questions for choosing a pet health insurance provider and policy.  For a pdf version of this brochure, please use the following link:
